Oral Cancer – The Importance of Antioxidants
April is National Cancer Control Month, and we want to discuss ways you can prevent and control oral cancer. It is estimated that over 43,250 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer each year1. Many could have been prevented this by cutting back on or quitting smoking and heavy alcohol use, but you can do more to prevent a cancer diagnosis.
Control Cancer by Controlling Your Nutrition
An important and effective lifestyle choice that you can make to prevent and control cancer is proper nutrition. Studies show that a diet high in antioxidant rich food helps your body to prevent oral cancer, and some studies show a decrease in precancerous oral lesions.
Antioxidants, Phytonutrients & Bioflavonoids
Strong antioxidants like Vitamins C and E are believed to fight cancer by preventing and repairing cell damage. To increase your Vitamin C intake, consume foods like broccoli, peppers, and citrus fruits. For foods high in Vitamin E, try tofu, nuts, avocados, and fish.
Bioflavonoids and Phytonutrients like beta carotene are antioxidants that aren’t vitamins but also can reduce cancer risk. Beta carotene is converted into vitamin A for example, which boosts your immune function among other benefits. Be sure to consume carrots, peppers, squash, leafy green vegetables, onions, apples, green tea, and red wine (in moderation).
Researchers believe and some studies show that these vital antioxidants are more effective than vitamin supplements when taken in their natural state as part of a healthy diet.
